    This romantic, hilarious, and astonishingly moving story, winner of the Grand Jury prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, explores the power of the imagination, set against the stark reality of World War II Europe. The companion screenplay to the Miramax film presents the profound yet tender story that has touched the hearts of so many.
    At the center of the fable is Guido, an enchanting individual with childlike innocence and grand dreams of owning his own book shop. It's 1939, and he and his poet friend Ferruccio have come to the Tuscan town of Arrezzo to stay with Guido's uncle. With unabashed humor and joy, the two seek fortune and romance, ignoring the growing anti-Semitism, some of which has been directed at Guido's own uncle, and the Fascist government that surrounds them. Guido falls in love with Dora, a beautiful young schoolteacher, and a fairy-tale romance ensues.
    Several years after, Guido and Dora are married and have a son, Giosue, and Guido has finally opened the book shop of his dreams. But now, the occasional bigotries Guido once ignored have become Racial Laws with which he must come to terms. Now, in this inconceivable world, Guido must use his bold imagination and every ounce of his indefatigable spirit to save those he loves.

罗伯托·贝尼尼1952年10月27日出生于意大利Arezzo的Misericordia，他曾在佛罗伦萨培养神父的神学院受教育。由于洪水的原因，又 被迫离开了这所学校。后又在普拉多的会计学校学习过。他的父亲Luigi Benigni原来是农民做过木匠、砖瓦匠，1943-1945曾在纳粹集中营呆过两年。他便是在他父亲的经历的基础上进行《美丽人生》的创作。同时，罗 伯托·贝尼尼也是该片的主演。


象这种描写第二次世界大战犹太集中营中悲惨生活的电影很多，最著名的莫过于《辛德勒名单》。然而天性乐观幽默的意大利电影艺术家出人意料地从陈旧的创作素材中挖掘出了新鲜的东西，最近在本市放映的《美丽人生》，即在充满鲜血和死亡的集中营里找到了一种美丽。



◆原版书和翻译版最大的区别在哪里？
原版书表述的是作者最原本的思想，一个内容经过翻译的辗转可能就失去了本来的味道，就好比“给力”如果翻译成了give force是不是在韵味上就差了很多呢？读原版书就能在最近的距离感受作者的真实笔触，这可以说是读原版的最大优点。

◆原版书会不会看不懂呢？
其实外文书没有你想象的那么难懂，一旦开了个头融入美系的写作和思维方式后，反而是很容易理解的。相反的，有某些文章，经过翻译后在中文里却产生了歧义。 很多外语学习者总觉得自己水平暂时还不到位，不敢迈出这一步：事实上，是大家对于英语原版书过于害怕了。基础不好的同学可以凭借对影视的兴趣，遇见生词和 新说法查词记录，日积月累词汇量和语感都会有很大的提高。
